The oldest lock around is known to be about 4000 years old. Padlocks were known early in time to the Greeks, Romans and Europeans. These locks were usually made of brass, iron, or bronze. The lock and keys were usually rugged in construction and internal locking mechanisms were often fairly simple and easy to defuse.
